#MINNAatHome with founder Sara Berks

By Sara Berks

Every piece we create at MINNA carries a story — one you bring into your home when you welcome our handwoven pieces into your space. Seeing how you make these pieces part of your lives is one of my favorite things. This time, I’m turning that idea inward: Domino recently asked for a tour of my home, and I decided it was time to share a little of the space that I call home. My home has always been a work in progress — created on a tight budget and filled with objects that carry stories: ceramics and textiles collected while traveling to visit our artisan partners, Mary's plant ephemera, and colorful updates like our MINNA wallpaper.

I hope this glimpse inside shows how MINNA comes to life in a home that’s layered with stories, intention, and a little bit of imperfection. Thank you for letting me share this piece of my life with you.

As someone who spends their days immersed in interior design, I’ve always felt a little hesitant about sharing my own home. It’s a work in progress — always evolving, shaped by a tight budget, and filled with the stories my spouse Mary and I have built together.

When Domino reached out for a home tour, I decided it was time to finally share. Every day, our customers invite MINNA into their homes, layering our pieces into their lives. Now, I’m inviting you into mine — a space where craft, color, and our stories come together.

Over the past few years, we’ve added colorful touches that have truly made the space feel like ours. From my collection of textiles and ceramics gathered during travels to meet our artisan partners, to Mary’s growing assortment of plant ephemera, to the launch of MINNA wallpaper, every detail reflects our personalities and the way we live.

Our kitchen probably had one of the biggest transformations. The countertop was once a kitschy black-and-white tile that we replaced with a modern concrete countertop. We also built a small laundry room / pantry that you can access through a salvaged door. We added additional shelving units and painted the original cabinets a warm ochre.

I've been collecting vessels and pitchers forever - it's always been an object I'm drawn to. When I started traveling to Latin America that obsession began to grow and grow when I visited different artisan groups. Most of our mugs and ceramics don't match - and you'll see pitchers and vases of all styles and sizes all throughout our home.

Many of our furniture pieces throughout the house are vintage - either belonging to my grandmother, my dad's childhood bedroom, or Mary's family home. We've mixed in some contemporary pieces as well including a Room & Board sectional and the Zig Zag shelving unit from Hem.

Mary is a research scientist with a focus in mycology, and they've brought a lot of plant ephemera (they have quite the seed pod collection) and mushroom inspired artwork into my life. Mary comes from a family of 'collectors' and we even have a rock with a typewriter note attached to it from Mary's grandfather about where the rock was found.

The trim and wainscoting is painted with Backdrop.

When we launched the wallpaper collection, I knew I wanted to wallpaper our stairway and downstairs bathroom. It finally made those spaces come together.

We have two guest rooms upstairs, one of which we transformed into my office by working with a friend to create a built in desk and closet.

We installed new sconces from my friend Virginia Sin.

I also often work on our three-season porch where we have a big table and I can spread out to work on my painting practice.

Our bedroom we've kept relatively simple. Most of the furniture, again, is vintage or family heirloom. We've hung pieces of artwork that I've made or friends have made or that we've collected on our travels. A big transformation that we didn't capture, is that we added a full bathroom off the side of our room. Originally the house only had a half bath upstairs and a full bath downstairs. This was our largest project!

I hope you've enjoyed this small peak into my home.
