We’re so excited to announce the opening of LIFTED: Public Housing, an Aerial Perspective, a collection of pieces by artist and woodworker Sean Desiree depicting aerial views of seven public housing units in Hudson, NY. Each piece will be available for purchase with the intention of funding a grant for a local artist or maker who resides in Hudson public housing. The grant recipient will be chosen by a panel comprised of Sean Desiree, Sara Berks of MINNA, artist Tschabalala Self, and a member of the Hudson Housing Authority. If you would like information on how to apply, please follow this beginning Dec 1. When Sean first reached out to us about a possible collaboration, they shared with us the inspiration they draw from the women of Gee’s Bend, as well as their desire to highlight how public housing communities function as their own microcosms, separate from and often neglected by their larger communities. This dynamic is very present in the city of Hudson, and the public housing just a block over is often ignored by businesses and residents on wealthier Warren Street. MINNA is honored to host these works and proud to take part in a conversation about the problematic tension between these two spheres in our hometown. Sean’s pieces are handcrafted out of repurposed pallets, a 19th century schoolhouse in Albany, NY, and scraps from other woodworkers. The title holds a dual meaning, referencing the series’ intent to support residents of the public housing through both the grant and through the creation and celebration of work that highlights its beauty. It also refers to the literal and metaphorical perspective shift involved in portraying the buildings from an aerial view. LIFTED will be on view at MINNA December 7th-15th, with an opening reception the evening of Saturday, December 7th from 6-8pm in conjunction with Hudson’s Winter Walk.
