In Uruguay we work with the largest network of women-run cooperatives in the country. All of the yarns they use are handspun start to finish — from the shearing to the spinning to the dying.
Our abstract throws are handwoven on pedal looms by one group of women. They are then transferred to another group of women who needle felt all of the shapes onto the woven blankets. To do the felting, they create a large ‘template’ made out of plastic that has cut out holes for where the felting goes. They lay this atop the blanket and then hand felt with a needle, puncturing the blanket many times very quickly.
