- Pedal Loom

In the western highlands of Guatemala, we work with a cooperative of women weavers in the town of Cajolá. Traditionally, men are pedal loom weavers here and women are backstrap loom weavers. The women saw that pedal loom weaving was a more commercially viable way to support themselves and decided to break tradition.

In 2008, the women formed their cooperative. Together, they've been able to create a sustainable business for themselves while supporting their families. The weaving workshop is part of a larger cooperative that works together to provide childcare and other types of professional training.
