Backstrap Weavers - Cancuc
Cancuc is about a two hour drive from San Cristóbal, the capital city of Chiapas, through winding mountain roads. Once in the main town, we have about a mile walk to the cooperative we work with. This group is led by three young sisters who weave on backstrap looms in a very iconic Cancuc style, which consists of incredibly intricate almost pixelated designs.

This technique creates incredibly detailed patterns that appear to be embroidered, but are in fact woven. As artists of the craft, these three sisters are incredibly innovative and excited by designs that push the bounds of technique. The inherent geometry of this technique inspired the forms of our Barragan and Puzzle pillows.
