Product Story

The Jonote Three-Tier Basket is a beautiful storage option for just about anything! We like to use them in the kitchen (bananas and onions!), the bathroom (cosmetics! tissues!), or even in the studio (paint tubes!). The basketry is made by bending a flexible wood and then weaving the Jonote fiber to create the structure. Handmade by artisans in the Cuetzalan region of the state of Puebla.

A mother-in-law and daughter-in-law duo lead this group of women who weave Jonote baskets in Cuetzalan, Puebla. Their basketry is made using two different fibers: jonote and bejuco. Jonote is a tree fiber that is flexible and bejuco is bent to create the circular forms that the jonote is woven around.

About these artisans

The artisans only harvest with respect to the lunar cycle: jonote is harvested at the new moon and bejuco is harvested during the full moon.
